How It Works

In order to book a Teladoc online therapy appointment, you must create an account on their website or in the Teladoc app. Since they offer a variety of services and calculate your cost based on your health insurance, the registration process can take some time.

Once registration is complete, Teladoc shows users which therapists are licensed in their state. Users can view therapists’ qualifications and areas of expertise, as well as what languages they speak and if they conduct appointments via phone call, video call or both.

Teladoc appointments must be scheduled 72 hours in advance. Appointments are available seven days a week, though how soon and how often you’re able to meet with your provider depends on their availability.

Prior to the appointment taking place, users must fill out an additional health questionnaire and enter payment information, though Teladoc only charges after a person’s first appointment. Next, users scroll through recommended therapists and choose one to schedule an appointment with.

After completing their registration, users receive an email and text reminder with a link to their online appointment or instructions on how the phone call with a therapist will work. The therapist usually calls for phone appointments.

For video appointments, users receive a text message and email to enter the waiting room ten minutes before their appointment begins. During this time, a person can adjust their webcam, volume and/or mute settings, however cameras cannot be disabled for virtual appointments. Therapists also have their camera on during appointments.

Regardless of if you choose video or phone, all therapy sessions are 45 minutes. Each Teladoc online therapy session varies depending on the needs of each person, and the therapist they select.

After the appointment, Teladoc sends another email and text with any necessary follow-up information, such as recaps of the session, any “homework” a user can do on their own between sessions and instructions for scheduling another appointment. Users can also decide to set up another appointment with the same therapist or change therapists for their next session.
